Thanks Todd for another good blog. What do you think of the latest rumour for getting ROR for Hamilton, seems ridiculous to me.

Good write up!

Tough call on the Bennett+ for Domi idea. Clearly his stats are inflated due to the Coyotes lack of alternatives. Bennett surely would have 30-40 points if he got eighty seconds of every powerplay. Also, do we really need another LW/C?

Bennett is also downright mean. Would suck to keep him in the division.

Would be pretty sweet to have the two on a line together with Jankowski in the middle.

Bennett for Christian Fischer would be pretty interesting as well. Big right shot RW that might fit on the top line. That said, not a fan of moving Bennett at all.

If Domi cost us Bennett then I'm hoping Treliving doesn't go looking. Would like to see Bennett moved to the top line RW for 20-25 games before they shop him. It worked for Ferland as a left shot playing RW why not try first.

"In saying that, scoring is a more pressing concern in the immediate future and I don't think the Flames have the assets to address both problems. I think Grubauer ending up with a team like the Islanders is more likely."

I dont really agree with this part, i think the Flames have the assets to make this work.

You could do a brodie and a poirier for Hoffman and then you could do bennett and gillies/rittich to make the Grubauer happen. Pieces could change but if Tre wanted to make it happen i dont think it would be as hard as people think.

If the Islanders want Grubauer i am sure Washington will ask for one of their 1st rounders and i think this could scare them off, but then again if they really want to sign Tavares they may have to waste one of those 1st rounders just to keep him.

I don't see why the flames should go the trade route...Ferland, Lazar, Bennet & Tkachuk should all take a step forward in return it should help Brouwer & frolik produce better numbers ..hopefully 40pts each
save your limited assets and sign some quality depth free agents

That was the hope for last year and 4 out of the 6 took steps back.

The only downside to those guys (Hoffman, Burakovsky, etc.) is that we really need a RH shooter. I feel like the PP trouble started after Steeger's injury because we didn't have enough "scare" induced by multiple potential one-timing positions. Need a RH sniper on the left and a LH sniper (Monny) on the right and one in front of goalie crease area/hashmarks (Tkachuk) with a solid QB up top (Johnny) and an opposing handed player free for the one timer as well (Dougie). In the last case Johnny would circle around to right giving DH the shot from the left.

I'd still love to see Kessel although the ask would be high. Luckily I'm pretty sure Pens need any kind of defensive help so Brodie and maybe Bennett seeing as they're pressed for cap space and will probably want a replacement forward.

Where were drafting we might have a shot at Riley Sutter, 6-3 200lbs right winger, scored 25 goals last year. Flames seem to like drafting Calgary kids, can't go wrong taking a chance on a Sutter.

First and foremost we need to address our goalie situation. Rittich, Gillies and Parsons were average at best this year. Smith is 36 this year. I say we should take a legitimate shot at Grabauer.

I agree. I just don’t think anyone is looking outside the box. I think we should at moving both Brodie and Stone as well as Frolik. I like all these guys but we need a change. Also, moving all those contracts freeze up a ton of cap space for us. Take on Orpiks $5.5 and get back Grubauer. If they really think they’ll lose Carlson, maybe they think Brodie can address the puck moving concern and we also get Burakovsky and a 1st.
They’re things we can do besides simply moving out player or prospect for player and dollar for dollar.

I agree!

Our goaltending situation makes me nervous. I think we can pretty much expect that Smith will go down with an injury sometime during the year and miss a significant chunk(s) of the season. While Rittich or Gillies may be able to fill in on the odd night, what I have seen so far as that neither can carry the mantle of a #1 (at least yet). Parsons may turn into a good goalie, but he seemingly still a long way off before he is an NHL goalie.

Grubauer seems to be a good choice for a 1b option with Smith.

I like Domi and wouldn’t mind him but I’m not sure I’d trade Bennett for him. But, Domi did punch out Kessler. That alone is a plus to have. 👍
